When I first started as a celebrity wardrobe designer, I wasn't all that interested in celebrity gossip. Actually, I'm still not. Yet, somehow the celebrity life fell into my lap.
One very specific memory of celebrity culture coming to me (other than my beginnings dressing CMA Fest stars), was when I got trapped in Franklin via a Tesla mishap.
On my 25th birthday, I rented a Model 3 Tesla to celebrate the last milestone of life. I’d heard good things about how they are fun to drive, and figured it’d be a fun way to celebrate the age of being able to rent a car. They say turning 25 is your quarter-life crisis… and I’m starting to think that might be true.
I made my way to Natchez Trace. Little did I know, that's where a lot of stars live.
I noticed hundreds of daffodils growing naturally by streams and fields on the Trace, so I stopped on a dirt path to pick some up. I knew that Teslas “fall asleep” when you open the door, meaning the car turns off. What I didn’t know was that I had no cellular service and my phone was my key to the car.
Now, if you are the owner of a Tesla, you usually have two keys that look like credit cards AND a phone app that is your key even without service. I was not the owner. I did not have these things. I just had the app without Bluetooth.
I picked the flowers. The Tesla went to sleep. I got back in the car. Noticed I didn’t have cell service…
Standing with 15 daffodils in my hand in the middle of rural Tennessee, I was stranded.
I needed WiFi. I found only four houses within the mile. I put my mace in my pocket and started walking.
Long story short, that walk to multiple houses led me to a kind couple that took me back to a public space where I could wait on my husband to pick me up.
On that ride, the sweet couple gave me a tour of every celebrity house in town.
They showed me the houses in Franklin where I was stranded.
